The Semiconductor Industry Exhibition Vietnam 2024 (SEMIExpo Vietnam 2024) opened on November 7 at the National Innovation Center in Hanoi with the theme “Upgrading Vietnam in the Global Semiconductor Supply Chain”.

The two-day event is the first and largest of its kind in Vietnam, hosted by the National Innovation Center (NIC) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI), a global organization with more than 3,000 member companies and 1.5 million semiconductor and electronics design, manufacturing and supply chain professionals worldwide.

SEMIExpo Vietnam 2024 attracted more than 5,000 delegates and 100 booths from major semiconductor technology companies from around the world and Vietnam, including Cadence, Qualcomm, Intel, Qorvo, Dassault Systemes, Siemens, Tektronix, FPT and Viettel.

In his speech at the event, Nguyen Chi Dung, Minister of Planning and Investment and Vice Chairman of the National Steering Committee for Semiconductor Industry Development reiterated that SEMIExpo Vietnam 2024 is an essential milestone in Vietnam’s efforts to integrate into the global semiconductor industry value chain. It is considered the “heart” of modern technology and the foundation of the digital economy.

Policy on developing Vietnam’s semiconductor industry

The semiconductor industry plays a significant role and is becoming the central economic pillar of many countries worldwide. According to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), the global semiconductor market is expected to reach US$600 billion by 2025, an increase of 14% from 2023, as the demand for electronic equipment increases and technological advances.

It is expected that by 2028, the size of Vietnam’s semiconductor market will reach US$7 billion, with a compound annual growth rate of about 6.69%. This figure shows that Vietnam still has great development potential and faces an excellent opportunity to participate in the global chip supply chain.

With its political stability, continuous good economic growth for many years, young and immense labor force, and enthusiasm for innovation, Vietnam is an ideal investment destination for investors in the semiconductor industry. Recognizing this opportunity, the Vietnamese government released the Semiconductor Industry Development Strategy 2030 and Vision by 2050. The goal is to make Vietnam a global semiconductor industry human resources center by 2030 and a global semiconductor and electronics industry center by 2040.

Cooperation in developing semiconductor technology in Vietnam

Qorvo and Cadence are two leading semiconductor companies in the United States. Both companies have signed cooperation agreements with NIC to train talents for the semiconductor industry from July 2024. The two companies will send support software experts, lecturers and copyright personnel to help Vietnam train experienced experts, lecturers and students in the semiconductor industry.

Specifically, Qorvo will provide lecturers and experienced experts in microchip design and the company’s training programs according to US standards.

At the same time, Cadence will support all microchip design software copyrights to support the training program of students participating in NIC’s three-month study. The cooperation between NIC and these companies is essential in developing Vietnam’s semiconductor industry.

The company has made steady progress domestically and demonstrated its capabilities to customers in the United States, Japan, Australia, China, and Europe. With a long-term goal, the company focuses on the following product lines: Power and IoT chips to provide added value to customers and contribute to the entire industry.

Military Telecommunications Industry Group (Viettel) is one of the leading companies in information technology. In recent years, Viettel has invested heavily in R&D and developed many high-quality information technology products to meet the growing needs of domestic and foreign markets.

Recently, Viettel announced the launch of a high-end 5G chip line, which Viettel Vietnamese engineers successfully tested. Vietnamese engineers have fully mastered this technology, a prerequisite for opening up future technological initiatives. The 5G DFE chip is the latest achievement of Vietnam’s mastery of high-end chipsets that few countries have mastered, helping Vietnam to participate more in the global semiconductor industry and produce a variety of chips for future artificial intelligence, services 6G, and the Internet of Things. FPT Semiconductor and Viettel High Tech are the only two companies in Vietnam capable of developing semiconductor chips. The two companies also plan to achieve self-sufficiency in chip production and packaging.
