50th year anniversary of diplomatic relationships between Vietnam and Canada

Celebrating 50 years of establishing diplomatic relations between 🇻🇳 Vietnam and 🇨🇦 Canada, August 21, 1973 – August 21, 2023. 🎉

The 50-year journey marked the development steps in the friendship between Vietnam and Canada.

Half a century ago, just a few months after the Paris Agreement was signed, Canada and Vietnam officially established diplomatic relations; Canada opened an Embassy in Hanoi in 1994 and was soon followed by a Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City in 1995.

In 2017, Canada and Vietnam announced a Comprehensive Partnership with mutual cooperation in all fields.

In terms of trade, bilateral trade turnover between Canada and Vietnam in 2022 will reach 13.8 billion Canadian dollars (according to Canadian calculation). Vietnam is currently Canada’s largest trading partner among ASEAN countries.

In terms of investment, by the end of 2022, Canada ranked 14th out of 130 countries and territories investing in Vietnam, with nearly 250 valid projects worth nearly 5 billion USD. Meanwhile, Vietnam also invested in Canada, reaching 150 million USD, accounting for 47.5% of Vietnam’s total abroad investment capital in 2022.

 

In terms of development assistance (ODA), Canada is the country maintaining ODA to Vietnam, the total value of Canada’s ODA to Vietnam from 1990 to now is about 2 billion CAD. Canada has announced a CAD 12.9 million ODA for a cooperative development project in Vietnam for the period 2015-2020; CAD 15.2 million for 2 food safety projects – SAFEGRO for the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Within the framework of the two countries’ meeting, on the morning of August 20, 2023, the “Golden Milestone” event took place in Ho Chi Minh City to celebrate this 50-year Canada-Vietnam relationship milestone.

 

The program is organized by the Vietnam – Canada Friendship Association in Ho Chi Minh City; Consulate General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City; Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations; Tuoi Tre newspaper and the “Sharing – Sharing” volunteer group, organized by Ms. Mai Thi Hanh – the wife of former President Truong Tan Sang.

From Hanoi, the Canadian Embassy also broadcast a message with a carefully choreographed video, reviewing the important cooperation achievements between the two countries in a variety of fields from economy, agriculture, education, security, defense, finance, people-to-people exchange…

 

Mr. Shawn Steil, Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam, expressed his delight at the long-term bilateral partnership between the two countries in many aspects: “We appreciate the great value of the strong relationship between the two countries … A lot has changed over the past 50 years, but what has never changed and always remains true is that we are very proud to support Vietnam on its path to becoming an inclusive, peaceful and prosperous country. more prosperous”
